Lantern Hollow is a cozy voxel survival game set on the Hollow Moors in the last winter of 1999. Five friends camp out for Halloween on a dare, and you wake up alone in the fog with sixty-two nights to go until midnight on New Year's Eve. Chop by day, build at the workbench and keep the fire lit, because nothing out there will cross its light: not the boggarts, not the barghests, and not the lampers, the people the moor has kept. It is in alpha, DRM-free, with a free demo in the browser, and it is made by one person at Ikigai Game Studios in the UK.

In a line or two

Long description
A cozy voxel survival game set on the Hollow Moors from Halloween 1999, for PC, Mac, Linux, Android and iOS. Chop by day, craft at the workbench, feed the campfire and hold the circle of light against the boggarts, barghests and lampers after dark, with sixty-two nights to go until the year 2000. Play it in isometric, over the shoulder or in first person, with a CRT filter if you want one. DRM-free: buy once, own every build.
Every step up in the fire opens up about twice as much ground: rolling moorland, abandoned camps and stone rings, a dense forest to the west, marsh pools to the south, a railway station nobody uses any more and, past the bog, what is left of an abbey. Days last six minutes, so there's time to go somewhere and come back, and a run ends when the fire does.
What is in it
Features
- Sixty-two nights from Halloween 1999 to midnight on New Year's Eve. Every world starts on Sunday 31 October.
- Chop and gather by day, build up the camp at the workbench, feed the fire at dusk and hold the circle of light after dark.
- Three cameras on one world: isometric, over the shoulder in 3D, and first person. Playing together, everyone picks their own.
- An open moor that opens up as the fire grows: an old railway station, a ruined abbey, the marsh and the western forest.
- Farm the plots, hunt rabbits, grouse and roe deer, set snares and fish the pond.
- The land follows the date, from late autumn through frost to snow from 20 December, and the cold gets into you.
- Nights that are not like the others: Bonfire Night, the storm, the power cut, the biggest moon in a hundred years, the 18:10 and the Millennium Bug.
- Arcade tokens, starting kits, a sticker album and mixtapes that outlive the run, and ten finds from 1999 in the woods.
- Three graphics levels, Classic, Modern and Beautiful, and a CRT filter with scanlines and a curved tube.
- Music made by the game while you play: 90s synths through tape hiss, changing with the hour and the fire.
- Play together on your home network now, and online with a room code from the beta.
- DRM-free: no launcher, no always-online check, no licence server. One purchase covers every build, and a Steam key at launch.
The Hollow Moors, 1999
The story
Five friends go up to the Hollow Moors for the Halloween weekend of 1999, on a dare. Round here they're just the moors; the sign says the Hollow Moors, after something that's meant to be out there. The first night is fine. You wake up alone. The tents are still there, your friends aren't, and the fog has come in like it doesn't mean to leave.
Chris, Dan, Gemma and Claire are out on the moor somewhere, each stuck and each needing a hand. There are sixty-two nights left of 1999, and at midnight on New Year's Eve the moor settles up: anyone who isn't at a lit fire when the year turns is kept.
The ones it has held longest have gone over to it. They walk the moor at night with lamps, and anyone round here would call them lampers. The railway used to carry the kept away, until the line closed in March 1965 with four names still on the list.

Out past the firelight
The creatures
- The lampers
- People the moor has kept, out at night with lamps. They want your fire out by midnight.
- The Hollow
- Drags itself on two long arms and follows whoever wanders furthest into the dark.
- Boggart
- A small shaggy thief. Leave anything out of the light and it is gone.
- Barghest
- The lampers' black dogs, dragging their chains.
- Peg Powler
- Green hair and green teeth, waiting in the pools on the bog for anyone who stands too close.
- Shardback
- Hunched and armoured in splinters of stone. Slow, and hard to put down.
